Graduated cylinders are a relatively inexpensive way to measure out volumes of liquid accurately. Our Class B cylinders are rated at 1% accuracy but this depends on reading them properly. If done incorrectly, the stated 1% accuracy can easily be 2% or worse.

In the video you will see that the position of the meniscus, the downward facing convex boundary of the liquid caused by surface tension, must be positioned correctly to get an accurate reading. You can see in the image of the 100 ml graduated cylinder shown in the video that the angle of the camera makes the meniscus appear incorrectly positioned.
