Water/Moisture Detection
We offer a variety of ways to detect the presence of water/moisture.
The cobalt chloride test papers are an inexpensive & convenient way to find out if water is hidden in hard to reach places. Simply slip the strip into crooks & crannies to get your answer.
If your problem is more elusive, you can one use of 3 different 8x10" (200x250mm) sheets we carry, each of which has its advantages & disadvantages.
- Cobalt chloride turns blue to pink at 55% relative humidity & up but is reversible. i.e. no permanent trace.
- Chlorphenol responds only to liquid water; turns orange to bright red & is irreversible. But, does not react below pH 6.
- Universal pH paper will, as it suggests, react with liquid water of any pH; is irreversible but may be ambiguous around pH 6. Pure water, fresh out of a distillation unit, is pH 7 but once exposed to air will absorb CO2 & eventually drops to around pH 6.
Water Hardness
Use these to test for calcium carbonate, the main dissolved mineral responsible for water hardness. Don't get scammed into buying an expensive water filtering devices or a water softener if you don't really need one.
Lead Acetate & Iron
Lead Acetate is used to detect hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in water.
The Iron test strips can measure both ferrous & ferric ions & are useful for detecting this in drinking water sources such as wells.
Phosphate; Nitrate-Nitrite
Phosphate & nitrate-nitrite fertilizers in farm runoff can be a serious pollution problem. These strips allow for quick & easy testing.
