3-5-10% Hydrogen Peroxide Test Strips

These test strips are intended for use with concentrated hydrogen peroxide. Unlike the other 2 strips, these change to only one color, black. The concentration is determined by the speed of the response; see the table below.

These strips can be used for testing peroxide based contact lens solutions but because of other additives, a 3% contact lens solution will remain white for longer than untreated 3% (30,000ppm) peroxide; this is normal.

The strips can also be used to confirm the strength of 35% food grade peroxide but this must be done indirectly. Mix 1 part of the 35% peroxide solution with 2.5 parts water; this dilution should yield a concentration of 10% and the strip should turn black instantly. If it does not, try other dilutions to zero in on the actual strength.

We do not recommend you make your own dental bleach for tooth whitening but if you do, make sure it does not exceed 10% and not swallow! Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive. Strengths of 100-400ppm are commonly used to kill bacteria in hot tubs; swallowing 100,000ppm (10%) is extremely dangerous.

Standard grade hydrogen peroxide sold in drugstores is typically 3% and is commonly used for bleaching hair, as a mouthwash, or as an antiseptic for cuts and scrapes. Because H₂O₂ decomposes into water and oxygen naturally you can use these strips to verify its strength.
