Science tuning forks are similar to music forks except that they are shifted downwards slightly in frequency. Middle C in the science series is set at 256Hz compared to 261.6Hz for the music scale. This is done for convenience since tuning forks are used in physics experiments to demonstrate the relationship of frequency to wavelength. As such, it is more intuitive that adjacent octaves are either 2X or 1/2 the frequency; e.g. 128:256:512:1024, etc.
