When used as part of a lab exercise, it is highly effective for illustrating the major features of the double helix as well as explaining the basics of DNA forensics identification techniques. 12 base pairs may not seem a lot but it is sufficient to illustrate the nature of unique DNA sequences needed for forensic analysis.
