Unit Molecular Models

Unit is our large scale set featuring 45mm diameter atoms (25mm hydrogens) and is the most versatile of all our models.

It was originally designed for building crystal lattice unit cells (hence the name "Unit") so each atom can be configured for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12 coordinate geometries & is suitable for making large VSEPR models, crystal lattice Unit Cells and large models in general. This same flexibility makes it very useful for chemistry since any VSEPR shape can be built. This set is ideal for lecture hall demonstrations.

Bonds come in 3 lengths of aluminum and one plastic for flexibility of scale and durability. The Unit Large Molecular Model can be used to build all the common structures used in organic & inorganic chemistry and biochemistry. Its solid design permits cyclohexane chair-boat flips, long chain alkanes, single bonds that fully rotate and double-triple bonds that don't.

How Unit Models Work

Each 45mm atom can be configured to respresent any standard VSEPR geometry & as well as a large range of non-standard geometries based on which combination of holes & pegs are used.

The image below left shows pegs placed for tetrahedral, trigonal-bipyramidal & octahedral configurations. The tetrahedral uses the 4/8 coordinate pegs; the trigonal bipyramidal & octahedral use radial & polar pegs.

Slots in the equator of the atom define positions of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 & 180 degrees where radial pegs can be placed. Not shown are special radial pegs (old style, shown lower right, special order) that can fit anywhere, not just the slots. You can click on that image for a closer view.

The image to the bottom right shows all the combinations from linear to 12 coordinate using the old style pegs.
