Orthorhombic System Crystal Lattice Unit Cell
The model of the orthorhombic system shown below has the following specifications:
- The front & back planes form a rectangle; vertical bonds are 65mm; horizontal are 125mm
- The side planes from a square; vertical bonds are 65mm; horizontal are 80mm
- There are holes in the equatorial position that are 90 degrees apart
- The top atoms connect to the bottom atoms using the polar holes
Orthorhombic crystal lattice structures are characterised as having all angles equal 90 degree and all sides of unequal length.
The model shown below is over 300mm (12") wide and is ideal for classroom demonstration. Examples of crystal with an orthorhombic lattice
structure include olivine and sulfur. |
