Graphite-Graphene Molecular Model Kit
Looking to model graphite and have an interest in carbon nanotubes? This
graphite molecular model kit is a great starting point. It comes with >120 atoms & 187 wobbly bonds. You can build a
4 layer representation of graphite or assemble as single layer graphene sheet you can roll into a short nanotube.
Or, you can build 2 C60 buckyballs and add either hydrogens or halogens to model a "fuzzyball" or a "teflonball".
The hydrogen atoms and 20mm bonds are listed separately. Note that the scale of the bucky/fuzzyball built from the graphite model will be slightly different.
If you build the 4 layer model you can actually feel the relative bond strengths. The bonds within the graphite layers are comparable in strength to those in
But, the attraction between layers is very weak such that they slide against each other.
You can actually demonstrate this by holding the top & bottom of the model & squeezing. The graphite layers "wobble" with respect to each other.
