Horseshoe & U-Shape Magnets
Horseshoe magnets were originally made to compensate
for the very weak strength of bar magnets. By making both ends of the magnet point in the same direction, the lifting strength of the magnet is doubled.
They have largely been replaced by stronger magnets for this purpose but they are still handy for use with paper clips, etc. in physics demonstrations.
Please note that some reference materials that call for horseshoe magnets in fact refer to u-shapes especially when in regards to building a motor.
If stored with their keepers in place, these horse-shoe magnets have a shelf life of 20 years. If you have a remagnetizer, they can be used indefinitely.
Note: Do NOT use steel horseshoe/u-shape magnets for repulsion. They will demagnetize almost
immediately. Use ferrites instead.
