Concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide Test Strips
(3-5-10%: 30,000-50,000-100,000ppm)

These test strips are intended for use with concentrated hydrogen peroxide, aka "food grade". Unlike the other 2 strips, these change to only one color, black. The concentration is determined by the speed of the color change. There is an initial "lag time" before any color change is observed and a completion time where the final color change is observed; see the table below. For 2 & 3% contact lens peroxide solutions, add approximately 5 seconds to the lag/completion times for these concentrations.

The strips can also be used to confirm the strength of 35% food grade peroxide by mixing 1 part 35% peroxide solution with 2.5 parts water to yield a concentration of 10%. If the color change is not immediate, then the initial concentration was not 35% (or you made a mistake in the dilution). Try other dilutions to zero in on the actual strength, e.g. 1:6 should give you 5%; etc.

We do not recommend you make your own dental bleach for tooth whitening or ingestion since hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive & can potentially damage your gums if you mix the strength.

Standard grade hydrogen peroxide sold in drugstores is typically 3% and is commonly used for bleaching hair or as an antiseptic for cuts and scrapes. H2O2 decomposes into water and oxygen naturally, so you can use these strips to estimate its strength.

Note (1):The numbers in brackets for 1, 2, 3% are for contact lens solutions. The 1 & 2% values are based on dilutions of the 3% product, so are only estimates. Tests are based on CIBA Geigy AOSEPT & may differ for other similar products.

Note (2): Suitable for detection of hydroperoxides and ether peroxides. Polymeric peroxides, which can form in diethylether, are not detected. Organic peroxides, such as di-terc-butyl peroxide, di-cumyl peroxide or terc-butyl perbenzoate, either do not react or react with significantly reduced sensitivity.

Note (3): The number of strips per pack or vial is approximate.
